By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSThe state of Colorado and federal authorities are trying to determine the extent of damage from wildfires that have burned across western and central Colorado.
On Sunday, authorities said one person died and several others were injured after wildfires tore through the towns of White Springs and St. George.
The Colorado Avalanche Center said the area is now being evacuated.
There were no immediate reports of other fatalities.
Officials also said another four people were injured in a crash early Sunday on Highway 101 near White Springs.
Officials said a tractor-trailer had overturned on the highway.
State police said in a news release that the driver and passenger were both transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The fire was moving at about 50 mph when it hit the highway near White Spring, officials said.
Firefighters were trying to get to the blaze but were unable to reach the fire because of the winds.
Fire officials said the fire was contained early Sunday but the winds could cause further spread of the fire.
